108 Families Affected by Flooding in Norala, South Cotabato

SOUTH COTABATO — At least 108 families were affected by flooding in three barangays in Norala, South Cotabato, on Tuesday evening, October 13, following heavy rainfall in the area, according to local disaster management officials.

The flooding began at around 8:45 p.m., affecting 50 families in Barangay San Miguel, another 50 in Barangay Poblacion, and eight in Barangay Lopez Jaena, based on data from the South Cotabato Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO).

PDRRMO chief Rolly Doane Aquino reported that floodwaters also entered several homes in four puroks of Barangay B.S. Aquino Jr., including Purok Legada, following the heavy downpour.

Residents call for improved drainage

The recurring flooding has renewed calls for the local government to address drainage problems in affected communities.

SK Chairman Joel Pineda and Rice Bowl Irrigators’ Association president Nevard Zambra urged the municipal government and Sangguniang Bayan to allocate funding for the construction of an adequate drainage system to help prevent repeated flooding.

Barangay Kagawad Simplicio Relator attributed the rise in water levels primarily to heavy rainfall. He also reminded residents to remain alert and move to safer areas when necessary.

Public urged to remain vigilant

Residents in flood-prone areas are encouraged to monitor weather conditions and follow instructions from local authorities, particularly during periods of intense rainfall.

The incident highlights the importance of effective drainage infrastructure and community preparedness in reducing the impact of flooding on households and residential areas.

Local authorities and disaster response personnel continue to monitor conditions and assess the situation in the affected communities.
