Magnitude 5.7 Earthquake Strikes Mindanao, Authorities Monitor for Possible Aftershocks
A magnitude 5.7 earthquake shook parts of Mindanao on Thursday, October 8, as authorities continued monitoring seismic activity across the region.
MINDANAO — A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck Mindanao on Thursday, October 8, prompting authorities to monitor the area for possible aftershocks.
The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) recorded the earthquake at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said significant damage was not expected from the tremor, although additional seismic activity remained possible.
The latest earthquake adds to continued seismic activity being monitored in parts of Mindanao.

Continued seismic activity
PHIVOLCS records showed several earthquake events around Davao Occidental and nearby areas on Thursday. One magnitude 4.6 earthquake recorded south of Balut Island in Davao Occidental was identified by PHIVOLCS as an aftershock linked to the powerful earthquakes that struck offshore areas of Mindanao in June.
The June seismic events included a magnitude 7.8 earthquake offshore of Sarangani and a magnitude 6.5 earthquake offshore of Davao Occidental.
While no significant damage was expected from the latest recorded events, the continuing activity highlights the importance of monitoring developments in earthquake-prone areas.
Residents urged to stay alert
Authorities continue to encourage residents to rely on official information from PHIVOLCS and local disaster risk reduction offices, particularly as aftershocks may occur following significant seismic activity.
Residents are also advised to remain prepared, secure objects that could fall during an earthquake, and know the safest areas inside their homes and workplaces.
For now, authorities continue to monitor the situation as Mindanao remains under close observation for further seismic activity.
